As communities change, the cultural stories embedded within existing places can be lost or forgotten, raising the question of how design can give new life to a space without disconnecting it from its history. This project reimagines a railway waiting shed in Gatton, within the Lockyer Valley, as a hotel reflecting the region’s agricultural and railway heritage. Site and cultural research informed the design, while hyperreality was used to heighten and reinterpret historical qualities through railway-inspired elements, materiality and spatial experience. Existing windows, timber slats and the station’s colour palette were retained, with large operable doors allowing the space to transition between hotel and waiting shed. A key challenge was respectfully interpreting the site’s cultural significance while adapting it for contemporary hospitality, demonstrating how adaptive reuse can retain place identity while exploring more responsible approaches to design.
