Renovation is often approached through demolition and replacement, despite existing spaces and materials holding environmental, cultural and personal value. This ongoing project explores how an older Gatton home with prominent dark timber and strong architectural character can be modernised without erasing its identity. Client consultations, site observation and spatial analysis have shaped and refined a brief focused on creating a luxurious and contemporary interior while retaining the existing walls and architectural elements. A palette of whites, deep browns and greens works with the existing timber, while lighting, flooring, furniture and doorways are being explored to enhance the atmosphere and spatial experience. The project has strengthened my understanding of collaboration and the importance of understanding how a client relates to their home, considering renovation as an opportunity to enhance both the space and the everyday experience of its occupant.
